Default My Aurora Prehistoric Scenes Layout - Circa 1973

I finally got to visit my folks and persuaded my Mom to let me take the photo album from 1973 so I could scan in some pictures of my Prehistoric Scenes layout.

I wasn't like the other kids. I was reading comic books and building dinosaur layouts. So, I've started to scan some of the pictures. I have had to do some photoshop work on them to get them to a place where they look good enough to post. As I do more, I'll keep posting them.

Time to jump in the way-back machine to my Dad's garage where a 10 year old was having a blast.....

My Allosaurus walking past the Cave.

Wolly Mammoth, Pteranodon and Cro-Magnon Man in the jungle....

Cave Bear and Sabertooth Tiger!

There will be more posted. It takes some time to get them to a quality where they can look good.

Enjoy!

Oh man, I know nothing about this... I do know, however, you just made Al's week!

What a strange little boy you were.
I think these kits came out way too early. It was years before "Land of the Lost" on Saturday mornings and Jurassic Park made every kid love dinos. You were ahead of your time.

"What a strange little boy you were."

That's what my Dad always used to say!

The pictures actually don't do it justice. I had a working volcano on this layout. Took up half of my Dad's garage.

There was a great Hanna Barbera show on at the time that really got me going on this. It was called Valley of the Dinosaurs. Got a lot of ideas from watching it.

Worked on a few more pictures.

Close up of the stream, a Mammoth and some Cave People.

Distance shot of an Allosaurus and a Triceratops. Pteranadon and Cave in the background.

Managed to engineer a clean close up of the Allosaurus and Triceratops.

More to come!

Where did you get all the plants? Those don't look like the usual model model railroad type trees. Did you make those yourself?

Very, very cool! My Dad would have loved this! We used to work on these things for hours. To create environments for them is just tops!

Actually, I did make a lot of them. A lot of them were made from my parents boxwood hedges after dipping the limbs in varnish. Then, I would find old plastic flowers that people weren't using. Sometimes, I would get lucky and we could afford to go to the local "5 and 10" to get some of the nickel flowers that they made. Made some good scenery......

Thanks for looking! I've got a few more to clean up. The tough part is trying to make 35 year old pictures that were two and half inches square look decent enough to post.

Believe it or not, I still have every one of these models and I'm putting up a new display soon in the other corner of my basement across from my Bowens.

I'll post pictures in the coming months as I do that....

Your Dad must have been a saint. I don't think my Dad would have given me that kind of space in his garage.

I can honestly say I think I have the best Dad. Not only did he let me do this, he let my brothers put up a huge HO-scale train layout on the other side of the basement. It was 16 feet by 16 feet and it was awesome.

My Dad will turn 75 in January and I can honestly say he's my best friend.

Building train sets was my Dad's first love!

My Dad still does. Where my dinosaur layout used to be is now my Dad's own Lionel train layout. Plus, he collects airplane models. Here''s a link to an iPhone snap I took just two weeks ago when I was visiting.

He built this all himself (along with my Mom). Don't I have a cool set of parents?

Yes you do have a cool set of parents Simon.

My train set was never that complex. It had to drop down over my bed due to space limitations so my Dad engineered a large cabinet affair on the wall which operated like a fold down drinks cabinet.

Don't you just love inventive Dads!

WOW! How'd I miss this?! Even though I wasn't there, it's like a trip down memory lane all over again. Yes, you do have awesome parents. Can't say I own a single kit either from my childhood. Had to re-aquire them all over again. Well worth the time spent too. Thanks for sharing this....Now, I must wipe away a tear of joy!

You're welcome Steve. It was quite a childhood and I am so happy for the memories. Just wish I had more pictures of this layout.

Hey Al! Check the Prehistoric Scenes Project thread starting this weekend. I got a new T-Rex on eBay and I'm starting my work again.
