Default Dave Cockrum - Classic X-Men & Legion of Super Heroes Artist Comic Book Artist

Dave Cockrum & Chris Claremont at Eldorado Comics in Pennsauken, NJ Late 70s

David Emmett Cockrum (November 11, 1943[1] ? November 26, 2006) was an American comic book artist known for his co-creation of the new X-Men characters Nightcrawler, Storm, and Colossus. Cockrum was also a prolific and inventive costume designer, who updated the uniforms of the Legion of Super-Heroes, and did the same for the new X-Men and many of their antagonists, in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Read more about Dave here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Cockrum

The above picture of Dave & Chris was taken at my first comic book store, El Dorado Comics on Westfield Ave in Pennsauken, NJ. I believe the year was 1979. I would have been 10 or 11.

One of the things I loved about Mr. Cockrum, was that he never took Wolverine too serious. Before Byrne, Logan was a slobby drunk. I loved the playfullness Mr. Cockrum brought to the Uncanny X-men. And while Wolverine was Byrnes favorite, Nightcrawler was Cockrums, and I always thought Kurt was a more interesting character than Wolverine.

Remember those days when Wolverine was rarely the cover star of the X-Men? I think Colossus was in the Cockrum/Byrne days.

I had never seen this thread before. I am glad that it was posted at the top. I always said that no one could design a costume like Dave Cockrum. Would love to have see more of this Legion of Super Heroes work in this thread also.

Hoping for a Phase 6 with FS Statues of the following

  • Moondragon
  • Mantis
  • Wonder Man (in the Perez Designed costume)
  • Havok (need a new one in his classic costume because the existing one is too expensive on Ebay)
  • The Red Guardian (The Defenders member-this one is a longshot)
  • and a REALLY GOOD Phoenix Museum pose
