I know I'm in the minority, but I personally don't care for the IKEA stuff. I can see why people use them but it just isn't for me. I like having more than a couple pieces together at once.

I always lean toward a curio cabinet or custom shelf that is enclosed. This keeps the dust off and also accidental breakage from passing by.

Al, you getting ready to setup a display?

Haha. No. Not anytime soon. I've just seen a lot of cool displays lately & was wondering what the general consensus was? Also, I see people using Bestas, but not identifying what types of Bestas.

I prefer the bestas, but the ikea billy is a pretty nice option if you want to improve visibility of the back row.

The cabinet that I have my statues displayed in was one that was custom made for me by my friend (who is also my chiropractor). He also does woodworking so he is able to make them quite easily. Originally it was supposed to be used as a bookcase and a place to display statues but the statue collection overtook it.

I do like the style of some of the Ikea cabinets (because I do like that clean, modern look) but I do not like that fact that they are made from particle board and veneer. I do like the metal cabinets but I saw that there was one style that needed braced to the wall. I would not feel comfortable with those for fear they would come loose. Also the weight limit on some of the glass shelves worry me also.

The Billy is my go to shelf option. They are great as is, but have the option of extending up an additional row if you find a bit more space.

I think they are good, but the wood framed doors obscure statues more than I would like. The billy morebo doors allow for the statues to be more visible even if the doors don't look as nice.

I prefer Bestas. Or, at least, I did when the Tombo doors were available. AFAIK, the Tombos are discontinued now, and there aren't any alternative I like at the moment.

The Billy is great, but it's not terrible deep, so some statues just will not fit inside of it. You also don't have the option of a half shelf like the Besta does, so you can't have statues staggered.

Step 1. See
Step 2. Covet
Step 3. Purchase
Step 4. Sell something so you can repeat steps 1-3

I like using CD/Media cases for my mini-busts. The shelves are plentiful and adjustable and they only come out about 8" from the wall.
I have one 3-door that holds a lot of busts.
The thin black case to the left is an Ikea CD case they don't make anymore. Wish they still made them because it's become my favorite. It actually "hangs" on the wall and doesn't touch the floor at all. Takes up very little room.
I also have a couple of curios, but for FS statues I don't think you can beat the Ikea Detolf, of which I have 8.

I had one for about a year until a shelf exploded. I had a Bowen Jim Lee Rogue and a Bowen Gambit FS on the shelf. Too close to the 13# max, perhaps. I even had them close to the edges to distribute the weight onto the anchor points. Now, I don't feel safe unless I have something a bit more solid underneath.

Great idea for a thread Al!!!!

I'm abstaining from voting or now because all I've ever owned are the 4 Detolfs I have. I don't like them. They are ok starting out collecting, but I've kind of outgrown them especially since I've started adding SSC stuff to my collection.

My master plan involves something more sturdy and more permanent (i.e. Besta or Billy or even custom).

I'm going to follow this thread with great interest.

I've had four that I've been loading (possibly overloading) for the 3 years I've had them (collection thread). They scare the **** out of me though. The glass creaks every once in awhile. At first, it freaked me the hell out, but read and found it was normal. They still do creak to this day.

Having about 10k or so worth of statues in those Detolfs was a portion of the reason I got collectibles insurance. But overall, I've had no incidents - knock on wood.

How many FS statues do you think that could hold?

Some of the reasons I like them are:

- Uniformity - no gaps between displays
- Length versus depth. Deep enough to accomodate two rows of busts without crowding them yet not so deep that you can't see the back row clearly. It's wide enough to put together a good sized team display (busts) and still have room for accompanying comics/art etc.
- variety of widths and heights to customize your configuration
- Cost versus utility - low cost, easy to obtain and very flexible - works for statues, busts and books (without the books getting swallowed up by deeper shelving) and no worries of the dreaded "crash"

There are certainly more high-end options, but these will be what I use until I have a larger room and can have the entire room customized. For the time being, I'd rather sink my cash into classic comics and completing my collection of busts and statues.

I like the metal, industrial shelves because you can adjust the height, they hold up to 250 lbs. each shelf and there is a lot of room in the 72" high ones. I like displaying my statues in groups of two or three.
