Default Kickass Display Part 2: RiteGuyTu Design American Version ;)

Since my collection was growing, and my fiance put down the "You can't buy another statue until you put them somewhere that ISN'T the top of your dresser!" edict it was time to take action! I originally had purchased a Fabrikor from Ikea, but then I saw RiteGuyTu's Post and I knew what needed to be done...

After contacting RiteGuyTu and getting some tips, I put together my own little design and off I went. Fortunately, one of my friends is a carpenter by trade, so I was able to give him the design and he was able to help me improve it and put it together. We cut all the pieces last week, I spent all week staining (about 4-5 coats since I didn't sand, because of some of the details in the molding), then assembled today.

Obviously, I haven't built the base or finished the lighting / picture display, but you all should get the idea and I wanted to share with everyone to show just how feasible it is to do. You're basically looking at a circular saw for the big pieces, power drill for pre-drilling + screws, and either nail gun (or heavy duty glue) for the molding pieces. All in all, not that hard for a beautiful looking cabinet!

P.S. If anyone knows how to resize pictures within forums, the coding would be greatly appreciated!

Just an average every day guy, beating people up and buying nerd statues in his spare time.

Beautiful job, especially on the staining! Can I recommend maybe a small trim piece around the bottom, maybe covered with the decorative molding? Or is it too small? Looks like only about 2".

Looks fantastic. Do you have more planned?

Yea, totally with you on the trim piece on the "hat". I assembled it at my friend's house, then brought it home, so while it was one the level there, in application because of the slab in my house (50's slab) it doesn't sit quite level. So I'm either going to stain / add something to the bottom, or use a power sander to level out the pieces underneath.

Regarding the bottom / base, I'm going to design and make something for the Detolf's to sit in. Think something kinda like the bottom of a hutch with feet and what not. I have a tentative plan already and will design this week, probably cut it next weekend, then assemble week after that.

Thanks. It came out a good bit lighter than I assumed, but it actually turned out to work pretty well with the floors and other wood furniture I had. I wanted to kill someone staining the d*mn think 5 times, but the result was worth it. I guess that is the benefit of being OCD.

I'll post the base design as I get it finished up (tonight likely). After that is all finished being constructed (~2 weeks), then I'll really get to the decorating. The pictures in the bottom left and right corners are only 2 of about 8 I have.

So I thought the case needed a little something extra, and Apocalypse and Deadpool said they were lonely...sooooo I picked these up tonight.

I'm no grader, but I'm guessing 9.2-9.4 range on New Mutants and 9.4+ on X-Factor. BOOM!

Looks great, nice job! It's good to have have handy friends. "If the women don't find you handsome, they should find you handy!"
