Default Authentic RANDY BOWEN Garage Kit!

There are probably a lot of you who've never seen one of these, so I thought I'd post it in the main Bowen section for a few days before moving it to the Bowen Archives.
For years I've heard the stories of how Randy would schlepp to conventions week after week, selling his hand-made resin "garage lits" for a few dollars each when he was just starting out.
Monsters have always been one of RB's favorite subjects and I was fortunate to aquire this very interesting and impressionistic Frankenstein bust kit from that period.
It's full of the great details and stylistic flourishes that can be seen on the larger resin kits that Randy produced after forming Bowen Designs.
At the same time there's a roughness and immeadiacy to this Frankenstein sculpt that I find totally enthralling.
This was worth the long hunt and I'll remain on the lookout for gems like this.
I still haven't decided if I'll eventually paint this myself, the raw resin sculpt being plenty powerful on it's own, but I have a feeling RB would want me to paint it at some point.

Pretty amazing to see all the details up close and then see how small the sculpt actually is, isn't it? Randy sure packed a lot of budding sculpting talent into such a small package. It's easy to see how word-of-mouth became a buzz and eventually led to offers by Graffitti, Dark Horse and other large companies. This is one heck of a business card.

Would you believe I picked this up on eBay for less than a Bucky bust is going for these days? It was only about $25 shipped.
This is only the second Bowen garage kit I've seen advertised on eBay in 3 years. It's extremely rare to see them at all, much less listed in an eBay auction. The first one I was outbid on and it sold for BIG bucks. I was determined not to have that happen again. When I spotted the auction for this one I put in a HUGE bid and to my complete surprise I was the only bidder and got it for the opening bid amount. Even though Randy's name appeared in the auction copy, I don't think a lot of people knew what they were looking at. The auction was also listed in a section that Bowen fans don't normally check and the pictures of it weren't the greatest.
These things are as rare as hen's teeth these days. Not sure why we don't see them offered more, unless the small amount Randy produced aren't leaving the original purchaser's collections.
I think the days when Randy was producing these at home and selling them at conventions on the weekends was the most interesting period of his career. The fact that we have no idea how many of each he produced or even what characters he sculpted at that time makes them even more interesting when they do appear. This is one area of Randy's career I would dearly love to see detailed in the proposed Bowen Designs "coffee table" book. Who knows (other than RB) how many other gems like this are out there that we've never had the opportunity to even see a picture of?

Very nice kit. I picked up his Pumpkinhead kit on EBay a few years ago. I plan on getting it painted soon.

This was a very quick sculpt. Hence the roughness. Thanks for showing this. It was part of a series of experimental pieces I was doing. There was also a small grey alien, and a Bionica bust in this first set.
I think there were 50 of each cast?

Thanks for the info Randy. At least now I know what I'm looking for and how many are out there, which is a lot more than I knew before.
Glad you enjoyed seeing this piece again. I was a tiny bit concerned you might not appreciate my posting something from so early in your career now that you're known for producing such polished and sophisticated Marvel statues.
Your fans really do love to see this stuff from early in your career if this thread is any indication. Quickly sculpted or not they were obviously good enough to get people to sit up and take notice.
I really hope you kept photos of your sculpts from this period for eventual inclusion in the Bowen "coffee table" book. This is a part of your career that seems largely undocumented with very little info or pictures available on the web or anywhere else.
Something tells me I have a better chance of seeing that "small grey alien" in your coffee table book long before I actually see one in person, but I'll enjoy the hunt in the meantime.
