Review: IIIDesigns Conversion of Bowen Armored Daredevil to Batman by Sash501
First and foremost, a big shout out to IIIDesigns. David was unbelievable to work with, accepting every challenge I gave him and finding solutions to things I couldn't imagine. David, I look forward to you chiming in and possibly sharing some of your own pics . . . which put mine to shame.

Second, thank you to Al, the moderators, and all the members of this forum. I found this site years ago and without it, I never would have the collection I had, still have, and never would have found IIIdesigns to get this commission done.

In truth, I saw David's conversion of a Bowen Classic Cap to Cap Stealth and asked if he would do it again. He said he would, but would I be up for doing something new first. He actually suggested the Batman.

I'm going to now let the pics do the talking (even though they don't do this piece justice, way better seeing it in person) but will quickly make a few points and a couple throughout to help guide the eye.

The Construction Modification:

1. A few pics don't look like much, but it is me showing y'all all the tiny peg holes and adjustments that David had to do on this.
2. In addition to peg holes around the base, David also had to remove the arms and the head. He then also had to cut out and shape much of the neck and shoulders for the cape to properly fit. Truly and impressive feat.
3. The packaging was beyond impressive. The cape was shipped separately with the Ivy vines. The rest of the statue made use of the Bowen Box, but David recut much of the styrofoam to accommodate for many of the additional pieces. I was truly concerned with shipping and must say that when I received it, it was hands down some of the most professional shipping I've ever seen. THANK YOU DAVID!!

The Batman: I wanted a batman statue that would eliminate my desire to obtain another. As such, this had to have it all and represent many different Batmans that I've grown to love.

1. I went with the blue/grey because that is the batman I grew up with;
2. The cape and the horns were for a love of old "shadow of the Bat" comics (and some detective) where Batman's features were quite exaggerated.
3. The buckle on the belt, represents the Keaton Batman, which will always by my batman . . . Bale can suck it ;)
4. The grappling hook is from the Batman Animated Series.
5. The chang-o-head is Miller Dark Knight inspired (it's a Koto Magneto Head)
6. It's not a new concept to convert this daredevil to batman, which brought the challenge of separating this statue conversion from others that have been done. As such, in addition to all the base modifications and the change-o-head, the left hand was taken from another Bowen piece to make this Batman a bit more dynamic, rather than just having the simple DD fists.

The Base:

1. The gargoyle already looks as if it was set on rooftop. In addition to just the many Batman's I wanted represented, and the many villains that are represented, I also needed Gotham to be represented. What better way to do that then to have Batman on top of the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD)
2. I wanted to represent as many villains as possible. I couldn't fit em all, but I fit the important ones to me and am head over heals on how it turned out.
3. The face of the Gargoyle is painted like the joker.
4. The collar of the gargoyle is painted to represent Harley Quin
5. There is a whip tied around the neck representing Catwoman
6. If you look close between the toes, there is a scratched coin representing Two Face.
7. On the right shoulder are question marks representing the riddler
Their is ice/snow on the right foot representing Mr. Freeze.
8. The mask pinned by a battering represents Bane
9. Clay is dipping down the right side representing Clay Face
10. The umbrella hanging from the chain is removable to be displayed anywhere and represent the Penguin
11. The plant heads were taken from a SS Poison Ivy and then vines sculpted for them representing Poison Ivy. A small detail that I love, David geniously placed this near a sculpted crack that already exists on the Bowen DD. He filled the crash with more sculpted vines . . . just how plants would grow up a building . . . I love this!!

On with the pics:

Good lord that's incredible! Love how you guys incorporated different elements from different Batman eras.

I've been considering having David do a custom for me and seeing this makes the decision for me.

Congrats to you both!

Mentioned something in your other thread, but I love this piece. I will have to add this to the list of custom pieces that I must steal. :P

and both head sculpts are awesome, I would have to change them out daily!!

TrueFaith August 6th, 2016 11:01:32 AM

O M F G ! !
I knew this would be EPIC just from the title of the thread, but jeeeez...
I don't have enough adjectives to even start to describe what a wickedly awesome job this is.
David, you are a master. And Sash you're suggestions have resulted in one of the most interesting and awe-inspiring statues it's ever been my pleasure to view here on SM.
Lord, just look at that CAPE. That alone is worth the price of admission, but there's just SO much mind-blowing stuff going on here!

Simply Awesome! David (IID Designs) is an incredible statue customizer, and an excellent person to work with.

TrueFaith August 6th, 2016 01:37:42 PM

One of you guys needs to share this with Randy on his FB page.

Hellsbells51 August 6th, 2016 04:13:32 PM

Wow! Love it! Congrats! Really cool project...hopefully mine is soon after yours. I personally know how awesome David is to work with as him and I collaborated on his first commission working on my Koto Wolverine conversion from blue/yellow to X-Force w/ custom base a few years back. Very detailed and innovative! Not that he needs anymore's all evident in his IID custom conversion thread. Hope to see more projects!

iiddesigns August 7th, 2016 12:37:58 AM

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
I would also like to thank Erik for the amazing opportunity to work on this project! This has been his vision from the very beginning. From the long horns, Mcfarlane-esque cape, and all the other tiny little nuances. Erik set the stage, and hopefully I've been able to capture his vision! It has been challenging, but fun and rewarding as well!

I don't think I have too many pictures that would be much different from what is already here, but I'll share a couple of my favorite shots! And if anything has piqued your curiosity I'd be happy to answer any questions!
