The Second Commandment
I was just telling my gf about one of the threads from last night. She has brought up a VERY interesting point with specific regard to the lot of us. Is there not something in the bible about false idols? I am quite certain it is even one of the ten commandments. The bible does say that it is actually a sin to have an idol other than God and more so to make a representation of said idol- like a statue.
Hmmm....
I guess we are all going to Hell.
By the way, the gf is a scientist and is well-known and respected in her field.
She just sent me this quote:
“You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”
The second commandment.
Happy collecting!

I'm not worshiping my statues. It's art. I don't see a problem.

Do you like when they are autographed?
For the record, I don't have a problem either. This thread was created in response to some people who deem themselves religious and were posting last night. I wish to know how literal they are willing to go with it in an effort to illustrate how everyone, even followers of the same books, has their own interpretations which can not be proven or disproven either way.

I'm not a fan of autographs. I certainly would not pay more for something because of a signature.
Ah, there are so many levels of "religiousness" and "hypocrisy". To each whatever they are comfortable with.

The Mennonites didn't hit the scene until nearly 500 years after JC reportedly split and to this day remain one of the smallest (if not the smallest) recognized Christian Sect (<= 1.5 million world wide). And even more to the point, the ones who interpet the 2nd commandment as you decribed make up less than 30 thousand members of the Mennonite community.
I see where you are going with the logic, but (and maybe it's just your phrasing), but it seems like you are more interested in invalidating some of our members' views as opposed to trying to have a back and forth discussion.
And what does your GF being a scientist bring to the table? Is she a repsected/published theologian? By the way - I'm a Metrologist and very respected in my field. ...wait for it...nope...did nothing to validate any of my points. Dang it!
Anywho - I love y'alls bacon and no I don't worship my statues, but I do pray on occasion that my preorders don't hit too close together.

Finally,
Well yes, I am trying to invalidate certain things as much those things might like to see me bury my head in the sand and join the flock.
As for the reference to my gf, I did consider taking it out as it was merely to reference that she is disciplined. -and I am very proud of her. She was recently a key lecturer at a symposium in Philadelphia on an invitation from the Mayo clinic. As I said, I'm proud of her. So shoot me. I have had my share of bimbos for this lifetime. Either way, it was certainly not a knock against you being a meteorologist or anyone else's profession. Arrogantly though, I will say that I prefer not to waste my time in discussion with certain individuals. I am certainly not refering to yourself or anyone who is not educated with some form of title or degree, but it's nice to separate the cream from the rest sometimes. That and I don't wish to make a dozen posts to discover I'm conversing with a 12 year old.
As for the mennonites, I like to use extreme examples. You can find more traditional people with similar religious perspectives towards certain types of art.
Finally, I am open to religious views. However, I can't accept the blue sky, trees, and the smiling faces of children as proof of any specific religion's authenticity. However, send one angel, JUST ONE, down here old school style to kick someone deserving's ass and I will see you in church next Sunday. Considering all the shenanigans like Sodom and Gamorrah, it doesn't seem like too much to ask for, or even expect.
Thanks for the response.

Did God actually say that or did the guy writing the bible write that in there?
Or did something get lost in the translation perhaps?
Just wondering!

I'm going to say, in every forum I have visited or posted on, this type of post:

You can try.
I am sorry if you can not see the inherent relevance of knowing that someone who chimed in, via me without a log-in, has an opinion based from a scientific perspective as opposed to someone who has been selling velvet Jesus tapestries at a flea market.

+111111111!!!
I said it already on the other thread but ill say it again.
Statues of marvel/dc/whatever were sculpted to be appreciated not to be worship. Its so called "ART"
Other statues, im not gonna say a particular church, those who has those statues were meant to be worship. They were created by false prophets to fool mankind from worshipping the true God.
Do i like autographed statues or other things? SURE!!! WHY? Because it looks good, has higher value, and the authenticity is there!
I dont know why u ask but i answered it anyway.
Thanks for the greetings Paul!

You are welcome for the greeting. I hope you had a great birthday. I'm not a prick just so you know.
Anyways, the reason i asked is this:
In the English language, the following are synonyms for "worship": admiration, adoration, adulation, idealization, idolization, putting on a pedestal, veneration.
I am just trying to illustrate that everyone has their own interpretations. I do not think you need to stretch your imagination very far at all to consider that the second commandment could easily translate to include our shared hobby by many; but, again, that is each of our unique interpretations and no one can be proven right or wrong.

PaulFromToronto is the doubting Thomas of SM. Needs proof to believe there is a God. Do you need to see the air to know its there? I don't think your that special for God to send his angels to smite you down. Sounds Like the Devil tempting Jesus when he was fasting. Hmmm.. makes me wonder?

Well, I don't believe I am evil or deserving enough to be directly smited by God either. However, there are plenty of others who probably are and I would be willing to believe the Youtube videos of the archangel Michael smiting someone.
Anyways, i will drop the charade because you guessed it -I am Satan, Beeazelbub, The Prince of Darkness, Lucifer, The Fallen angel, and I am here to tempt you and steal your soul!!!!
By the way, the existence of air can be proven.

statues could be considered tokens of worship if we openly express praise and prioritize the acquisitions of such 'idols' above the wants and needs of our loved ones and sometimes even ourselves....

some serious fishing going in this thread. lol.
for those people who are Christians, (of which I am) believe that God sent his son to earth for their redemption, fulfilling of prophecies and for the one eternal sacrifice for mankind's sins.
so I ask you, if he sent his son and you don't believe what good would an angel do?
it's about faith, hence you need faith to believe.

A winged angel will do a lot for me.
For the record, I do have faith and I do believe in a creator. I just also believe that He is not properly interpreted through any of the existing organized religions. Man wrote the books, not God. We screw up everything.
How do you justify your God allowing children to be born into the third world conditions and never having opportunities like you or I. I mean opportunities to be taught about your one true God. Opportunities to not have to learn to steal or beg to survive? Opportunities to live a healthy lifestyle and learn a skill? Please don't respond with some utter nonsense about everyone being given their own test in the eyes of God; but I would like to know your opinion of these attrocities. How you can rationalize them using religion. I have asked this question previously but no one has attempted to answer it.
?
