I awoke to a big crashing noise this morning about 7:15. Considering my display room is right down the hall from the bedroom, I feared the worse. This is what I found: Of the eight Detolfs in my display room, the one in the farthest corner had its door shattered into a gazillion pieces, but, thankfully, all three shelves were intact. The only victim was a Jason Voorhees doll that was knocked over from his customary spot at the base of the Detolf.
Check it out:
What the hell happened? I live alone so there are no suspects save for those already in the room. Weirdly, the mound of broken glass crackled a bit for about five minutes after the crash (seriously!). Was Doom on his throne sending me a warning? Could the Beast bust at the bottom wanted out? Was the fact I had three Jean Grey/Phoenix pieces in a single Detolf a factor? Did Jason do it? Do I have poltergeists?
Seriously, I've had that Detolf since 2007, if not 2006. What could have stressed the door enough for this to happened? The Detolf still seems sturdy enough to me. Has this happened to anyone else?
I've seen this before, but with much larger display cabinet and with much thicker glass.
From what I learned about the others is that there's an imperfection in the glass, and WEIGHT, over time, caused it to crack and then "explode/implode".
In that particular corner, is there any heating/cooling vents or is that area more suseptible to temperature change...?
with grails like doom, x-23 and x-men vs. sentinel 1, you definitely got away lucky. any statue i have that has substance and weight is never put on a shelf. shelves are for light weights, especially with the value of the statues sitting on it. although many prefer glass cabinets like the detolf, i prefer good old fashioned wood.
lol Yeah, this is the point of "Paranormal Activity" when the man of the house says, "Boy, that was weird."

The only air conditioning vent is on the opposite side of the room, and it doesn't blow toward this Detolf. But your comment about an imperfection in the glass sounds like a good explanation.

I can see how some folks would prefer wood. The only consolation is that the Detolf's glass isn't weight-bearing. That is, unless three sides of the Detolf break at the same time.
This is just weird.
Y'know what I was thinking....the adhesive metal strip that you're supposed to put against the glass---the one that you need to put screws into....did you by any chance screw those in too deep and injure the glass? I'm wondering if THAT could have caused a weakness.

That's nutty. At least nothing was damaged and Jason finally got what was coming to him.
Yep, Jason was facedown in the carnage.

It wasn't pleasant, that's for sure.

Any theory is a good theory. But the temperature was the same as it always is.

I could have screwed those in too tight. But I assembled that Detolf at least five and maybe six years ago. That's a patient crack! lol

I was thinking the same exact thing. The thing that freaks me out about my detolfs is the creaking/settling sound they make from time to time due to temperature change. Looks like your Wolvie on the bottom shelf is shielding himself from the breakage lol! The crummy thing about the type of glass used on these is exactly what you experienced: the crumbling effect. You don't physically see a crack in the spider effect like a windshield. When these suckers crack, they crumble!
On the bright side, IKEA has a good return department. I'd bag up the glass and sit it on their counter and see if they're help you out lol. The worst they can say is no!

I bought these things about six years ago. lol I bet I'd be out of luck. But thanks for the suggestion, Cap!
Tempered glass is pretty strong stuff, but even a small impact to the edge of it will shatter the whole panel.
The tips of the screws that hold the door on a detolf don't even touch the glass. They screw into the metal plate that you stick on the door panel and the pressure is distributed along that plate, so I doubt that the screws were the problem, in that sense anyway.
I think it's more likely that the top screws loosened over time and the door panel slipped out of the top hinge in the middle of the night and struck it's top corner edge just hard enough to shatter the door.
With that in mind it might be time for all of us to check those screws and see if they need tightening.

That's great advice, TrueFaith! I have a feeling every one of us may have a few screws loose.
Eek!!
I came home one day to find a $500 statue on the floor one day and no shelf broke it just fell out of it's cradle, Kiani Lava Edition, by Michael Turner. Minor breakage, but almost impossible to repair on an amateur level. End note, no longer worth $500. Museum putty solves cradle problems too.
