Eek!!
I came home one day to find a $500 statue on the floor one day and no shelf broke it just fell out of it's cradle, Kiani Lava Edition, by Michael Turner. Minor breakage, but almost impossible to repair on an amateur level. End note, no longer worth $500. Museum putty solves cradle problems too.
Ouch! How does a statue fall out of its cradle? I'm curious about that. O_o?
I bought these things about six years ago. lol I bet I'd be out of luck. But thanks for the suggestion, Cap!
That's why you buy a new one, take it home, pull a switch-a-roo and return with a damaged detolf and a broken heart from just receiving a full refund and decided not to exchange it....
On another note, good to see your statues are okay! That's a collectors nightmare!? If you're ever looking to place that Doom or X-Men dio #1 in a safe and happy home....shoot me a PM! I'd love to purchase those off you....
I checked the tightness of the hinge screws on my 7 detolfs today. Two of the units had very loose top hinge screws and they happened to be the 2 oldest detolfs I own. I hadn't opened one in quite a while and the door glass actually shifted 1/4" when I opened it because those top screws were loose.
It seems that over time (years at least) the screws can loosen, probably just from ambient household vibrations and outside sources that can vibrate your home like heavy trucks passing by.
If the door glass had shifted by itself in the middle of the night like it did today when I opened it, there would certainly be enough of an impact to the edge to cause breakage of the whole door panel. Thanks to the OP bringing this to light I may have just averted a similar disaster.
so sorry to hear this..i use detolfs ..but i have to say you cant make the bolts on top gorilla tight esp the front ones over the door...not saying this might have cause this. all the glass is a temper strong glass..this is so stranged this happen..one time when i was putting together one i dropped one of the glass and it hit the end of a hard wood table..the glass was fine but the corner of the table broke. i would print this pics and show them to the ikea and contact them...so sorry this happen..on a happy note the statues look fine.

I'm pretty sure IKEA prints disclamers on the assembly instructions that come with Detolfs stating that the tempered glass panels will shatter if hit on the edge.
You really can't seem to tighten the screws enough, but that's probably because the only thing holding the glass door in the hinges is pressure from the metal plate held by 2 screws top & bottom on one side only. There is a lot of pull on the hinges because of the sheer weight of the glass. If it loosens in the slightest it will allow movement. It's an imperfect solution, but I prefer it to holes actually being drilled in the glasswhich would increase the price of detolfs quite a bit.

There's a 1/4" gap around the door on all sides, so it's not even touching the top. The glass on the sides and back aren't weight bearing either. The metal frame bears the weight. The glass panels only stiffen the case so the metal frame doesn't flex and can hold the weight. Which really only leaves one explanation:

Take a look at your detolf and you can see how if the top hinge failed catastrophically, the glass door edge would strike the flat part of the side glass. Tempered glass is strongest on it's flat surface and weakest at it's edge and such an impact would most likely result in the carnage seen in the pics. The door could have been loose and ready to drop for a while before a final vibration overcame whatever friction was still holding it in the hinge.
Good thing about the glass on detolfs is that it's just plain tempered glass. Any glass dealer can cut an exact replacement piece with sanded edges that you can replace a broken one with in minutes.
... What the hell happened? I live alone so there are no suspects save for those already in the room. Weirdly, the mound of broken glass crackled a bit for about five minutes after the crash (seriously!). Was Doom on his throne sending me a warning? Could the Beast bust at the bottom wanted out? Was the fact I had three Jean Grey/Phoenix pieces in a single Detolf a factor? Did Jason do it? Do I have poltergeists?
It obviously was Cyclops on the top shelf. Just look at him!
Jean, Kitty and Wolvie in the back all look skywards. The top shelf team was doing a heroic shot pose. Then Cyke probably got really pissed off by some reflecton in the glass. So he undid the problem.
Check out the way he is looking down:
"Screw you, glass! ... And f*** you too, Vorhees! You do not belong with the X-Men!"
The others still kept the pose, pretending not to have noticed.
Also, the inhabitants of the lower shelves provide further proof:
The second shelf ensemble all clearly are are going: "What the...?!?"
And Beast, Weapon X and Wolvie at the bottom are all like "WTF!!! Yo, watch it, Ckye!"

Oh my gosh. At first I thought a shelf bore too much weight but then I read and saw that it was the door?! I just bought the same detolf. Im freaked out now! I am sorry to hear about this. Im glad the statues survived. I must say, thank you for posting this. You probably saved me and a few others from running into the same problem.
TrueFaith - Your explanations are really good. I thought I could just leave my detolf alone but I will keep a keen eye out for something like this.
BBRX807 - Those are Ikea Detolf Glass-door Displays. You buy them at Ikea. I just looked it up and you live in a location where Ikea is exactly located. Houston, Texas.
Oh those. Ive scene those around. Amazon? Or various of other stores that sells collectables.
Back to the glass door breaking. When you think about it, these detolfs are not made to hold much weight. Really its the wire frames and the glass holding the stand together. Thats all. It seems like the Huge Doom statue on top of the detolf had a lot to do with this.
If you're talking about the clear plastic risers, most people on the forum get theirs from an eBay store called Laser Creations.
A search for "risers" or "acrylic risers" on eBay should pull them up.
I awoke to a big crashing noise this morning about 7:15. Considering my display room is right down the hall from the bedroom, I feared the worse. This is what I found: Of the eight Detolfs in my display room, the one in the farthest corner had its door shattered into a gazillion pieces, but, thankfully, all three shelves were intact. The only victim was a Jason Voorhees doll that was knocked over from his customary spot at the base of the Detolf.
Check it out:

Seriously, I've had that Detolf since 2007, if not 2006. What could have stressed the door enough for this to happened? The Detolf still seems sturdy enough to me. Has this happened to anyone else?
Hi,
I am a glazier, aka glass guy.
Firstly, Don't worry about Jason. He may be down but we all know that he doesn't stay that way for long.
Thos shelves are made from what is called tempered glass. It is heat treated to break into all those tiny little rubble-like pieces so that you don't have larger and sharper shards of glass fall on you resulting in injury. When the glass breaks, the tempering process results in millions of tiny cracks forming instantaneously throught the entire piece. The crackling sound you heard were some of the cracked but still joined pieces pushing away from each other. In this situation, the likelihood that I could tell you exactly what happened if I were there looking at it is slim. My educated guess is the that a set screw in one of the door pivots was either over tightened or the barrier between the screw and the glass (often made of foam or rubber) was faulty or absent. Either way, it may be a good idea to check over your remaining display cases from time to time. Temperature changes between the season can cause many things to shift in shape very slightly -which is often all it takes to destroy a piece of glass. If glass touches the wood of your base it should be fine and there is a less than 1% chance the glass itself had a fault. This sounds like a classic case of glass meets metal screw. If your are really concerned of this happening again, I might suggest you replace the door with tempered laminated glass, or atleast laminated, with a polished edge. Laminated glass is also sufficient for safety and will not crumble like tempered mess you have currently. It will only crack. It is two pieces of thinner glass with a super thin sheet of plastic in the middle holding it all together. However, if you do not temper it, it is more fragile and you will need to exercise a little bit more caution when opening and closing it.
Anyways, that's all I've got.
Hope you get it sorted.
P.S.: I also have a couple of those exact same shitty Ikea display cases. I think a lot of us do. We should all, including myself, be reminded of the irony of how much we spend on our hobby and how little we invest to protect it.
If you want to replace the door on the cheap, It is "clear tempered 5mm thick glass with polished edges". Just measure the existing height and width of one of the other same cabinets and order it yourself from a local glass supplier or shop. Tell him exactly what I quoted above and the size you measure yourself. Expect at least a week for a tempered piece. Don't forget to make sure you do NOT sweep up and throw away any of the screws or pivot hardware along with the glass.
Good luck
