What have been the big Marvel stories of the last 20 years?
I punched out of reading comics in the early 90s. Death of Superman, Batman's back broken, Spidey Clone Saga. The era of multiple covers, variants, exclusives.
I've kind of watched without really paying attention since then. I know there was a Civil War thing. Is there one trade paperback I should buy to catch up on that story? I know it was probably done in every book. I just want to read something that captures most of what went on.
Outside of Civil War has anything else major happened that is as big?
I'm ignoring the re-launch that is coming up, but see no reason to not go backwards and catch up.
I see there is a Red Hulk (Rulk). What is that about. Please don't tell me we are going to see all the colors of the rainbow, or something like DC's multi-colored Lanterns.
Any significant, new characters? Clone of Wolverine (X-23?) is she significant?
What would you recommend to read that's available in TPB format?
I'm in the same boat having got out early into the "crazy phase".
I do try to pick up trades when I hear enough buzz about something. Of the ones I've checked out, I enjoyed the Ultimates I & II, Civil War and Annihilation.
Would love to hear about any other "must-read" storylines which have been released in TPB format.
It's too much... I can't figure which one TPB to get to read about Civil War. There's a number of TPBs out there, do I need them all? It's almost like work. I don't want to get them all, minor stories, I want the big picture, the major stuff. Companion books, and so on. I guess I have sand in my crotch and I'm irritable, I don't want to spend a lot, don't want to work at trying to figure out what I should and shouldn't read. I'm going to go over there, in the corner. I'll pout, sulk, and be angry at the world.

Planet Hulk, World War Hulk and 1-6 Red Hulk TPB are all self contained.

This is basically all you need for Civil War. It's the actual 1-7 issues without the extra tie-in books.
Oh and stay away from Secret Invasion.. IMO, that was one of the worst stories they wrote. Many of the major plot lines occurred outside of the main issues. It was a complete mess.
